GMail IMAP service.

I was using thier POP3 for my lighter mail account and POP3 is a joke. IMAP on the other hand is brilliant, and im using it on my primary mail account. it can handle large numbers of mails without actually downloading them. would be useful if u had mobile devices that handle your email (ex. iPhone)

very nice of google to provide this service for free.
give it a try. im using gmail form outlook express has a few benefits... my contacts are all synced up with my phone and now i manage single database of all my contacts online (gmail) and offline (phone, computer). another adavantage is that if i need to attach 78 files (photos?) to a mail, i can just select the files from windows explorer, rightclick -> send as attachment (as opposed to select all 78 files one by one in the webmail interface).

whats on my e50.

had it for some time now and managed to load it up with all the good software and its working better than my old 6600, havent missed it at all.

Software:
  • X-Plore - its a good file manager and is an absolutely essential piece of software for any smartphone user. basic.
  • Papyrus - i dont use this much, but its very good for managing the calendar and todo list. simple, clear, and effective.
  • TaskMan - absolutely essential, it lets you monitor the apps running, the free memory and manages the installed applications.
  • SmsChat - a very cool application, it displays sms chats ans a IM conversation and each message appears in the form of a bubble. very useful and good to use.
  • X Safe - i use it to manage my passwords, whats cool about this is that it comes with a PC application thats syncs entries with your phone. so u can manage secure items from the phone or PC. useful.
  • BestCalc - never used, maybe be useful at some point.
  • LCG Jukebox - never used, dont know about the advantages over the default mp3 player, i bet it has many tho. very popular.
  • Google Maps - for the cool idea of using the phone for navigation, expensive to use at 10p per 10kb GPRS. very cool tho.
  • MSDict - Dictionary! very useful, can be expanded to many languages, or professions. must have
  • miniGPS - a wonderfully brilliant application, have always been a fan of it, it works my monitoring which cell of the local network our pone i currently in and you can assign actions on entering or leaving a cell. actions such as - sms, alarm, profile, wallpaper change, bluetooth state. so i have it configured to switch ON bluetooth as i enter my house and switch it OFF as i leave my house. highly recommended.
  • GMail JAVA app - the only java app on my phone. mostly because java apps sre very slow and sluggish and not fun to use, but this also probably the most useful and most used application in my phone. i cant live without it. and is recommended over the default mail app as it is very light on the network and retrives info as it is requested, similar to IMAP. gmail just announced IMAP support for all users, so maybe its a good time to throw away this JAVA app. never the less a MUST HAVE.
  • Handy Clock - it has a word clock, day/night map, calendar, alarms (multiple alarms), timers, stop watch, and a very cool time-log. greatly extends the functionality of the phone. recommended.
  • CoolSMS+ - used once. allows u to send flash sms, blink sms, and service sms. may come in handy someday.
  • KeyLocker - auto keylock for symbian phones. has the option to prevent locking in certain apps. the problem with this is i have to choose the apps manually, a big pain. i wish they would make it so it locks ONLY in standby, no where else. would be perfect then. nyeh.
  • ImageExpo - allows u to view the phone screen on a PC and control the phone from the PC. awesome application.
  • NStarter - what would i do without this apllication... it has made uing my phone so much quicker and easier. in short it allows u to assign key combos to apps, for example: note+'0' = toggle bluetooth, note+'#' = silent, note + '5' = someother app. awesome.
  • TextQuick - this one puts nokia to shame, it has made sending messages so much easier and quicker. the first time it runs it looks into my inbox and sees who i message the most and places those contacts on top of the list and the entire phonebook below those names, so it becomes easier to message people that i usually do. this app is so useful it gets one of my precious softkeys in standby.
  • BlueRadar - nyeh, total crap IMO.
  • PowerBoot - crap again, IMO.
  • MobiReader - an awesome e-book reader. must have.
Games:
  • Sensible Sudoku - very nice game, perfect sudoku on the phone, easy to navigate and play.
  • Massive Snowboarding - this game has potential, it features a great idea which is very fun. shame the phone cant handle the graphics, its often slow and jerky and not so much fun. good game tho.
  • KRally - top-down racer. good fun, the cars can even have weapons and nitro effects. nice game.
  • SkyForce - 'nuff said.
  • Invasion - very slow game, dont have the patience to play it. i dont know why such games are made for phones, if i want to spend time learning a game and enjoy playing it, ill use my computer or my psp. the phone is for quick and easy fun.
  • Super Miners - a very addictive game, great puzzles to solve and really good game to have on a phone.
  • Filao Fried Chicken - wow. just wow. great colorful graphics and a new idea games, good for one-handed game play.
  • Robo - has to be my favorite game. its basically puzzle solving, and involves thinking a bit. very nice and involving.
  • Ball Rush Aqua - classic arkanoid with a twist. good for a quick game to waste about 5 minutes.
  • Go Bananas - very simple game with nice bright graphics, bananas fall from the trees on top, your aim is to catch them. simple.
  • The Incredible Machine (JAVA) - the only java game i have, i would not have kept it (i hate java games/apps) if it wasn't for the amazing game idea. you have to try this one out. the game is available for the PC also, its not so much fun on the phone as on the PC but still, a good game.
  • Micro Pool - awesome pool game, very easy to play and fun to play against the computer, nice graphics and smooth animations. good game.
  • Mahjong - classic mahjong, kinda hard to navigate to tiles on the phone, haven't played it much.

setup of the development environment.

after talking to a bunch of people on irc and the forums.
theres just 2 real ways of hard-core psp development.
1. cygwin
2. full scale linux installation
i chose a full linux FC7 install from within vmware, i thought it would help me become comfortable with linux too.

i had some problems with disabling ipv6 and /etc/resolv.conf file for the name servers (router kept resetting it to values that wouldnt work, a fix is to use static ips instead of dhcp) google for disabling ipv6.

the psptoolchain needs to be downloaded form ps2dev.org
another command that can be used is
"svn co svn://svn.ps2dev.org/psp/trunk/psptoolchain"
read the included readme for further information incuding dependencies before installation.

started to download the sdk and am still in the setup process. takes long.

Hello World!

using this space to track my psp development.

using this space as my blog!

very late right now.
